The Secret to Being the Host Everyone Wants to Stay With.

We've all stayed in homes that felt welcoming from the moment we arrived. Not because they were perfectly decorated or stocked with expensive amenities, but because the host anticipated our needs before we ever had to ask. That's the foundation of great hospitality.

In my guide, Hosting- The Overnight Guest, I share the simple systems and thoughtful details that help guests feel comfortable, cared for, and genuinely at home. Here are three of my favorite tips:

1. Focus on What Guests Actually Want

When preparing for overnight guests, most people worry about having the perfect guest room or serving elaborate meals. In reality, guests are looking for three things: respite, privacy, and thoughtfulness. A comfortable place to rest, a little personal space, and a host who has considered their needs will always matter more than perfection.

2. Create a Boutique Hotel Experience

One of the easiest ways to elevate a guest room is by borrowing ideas from great hotels. Fresh linens, water by the bedside, a place for luggage, and a robe within reach can transform even the simplest room into a welcoming retreat. The goal isn't luxury, it's comfort.

3. Add One Unexpected Touch

One of my favorite hosting tricks is placing a small decorative bowl on the dresser filled with perfume and cologne samples. It's inexpensive, unexpected, and always becomes a conversation starter.

Thoughtful details like this are often what guests remember most.

These ideas are just a glimpse of what's included in the full Hosting - The Overnight Guest guide, where you'll find room preparation tips, shopping recommendations, bed-making instructions, a printable guest prep checklist, and several other thoughtful tips designed to help you host with confidence.

Because the best hospitality isn't about impressing people, it's about making them feel at home.
